ESSAY

My Background

The High School Experience
As a student who went to a “normal” high school, then a charter school, I could say I have a better understanding of what school is better for me. I can not say that one is better than the other because each school has its own set of things that make them good and bad. Though at first, I didn’t want to come back to ACLC during my junior year, I have enjoyed its better quirks. One would be that you can always ask Facilitators for help when you need it.

Personal Qualities, Work Habits, And Attitudes

I feel self-esteem and self-worth are two different things. Self-worth is what skills and other things you think you can do are, and self-esteem is how well you think you can do those things. The problem is that I have a decent set of skill that can range from video games to writing 5-page papers, but I don’t believe I can do those things very well. This thought process is hard to deal with because when I need to write a paper I always think about if it is good enough and that oh this is never gonna get a decent grade. Even when I get good grades on essays I don’t believe it and shrug it off as luck. Though this is no the case when it comes to career know how I know exactly what I want to do and how to get there. I’ve been thinking about doing welding as a profession and it requires nothing to do, but you don’t get paid well if you don’t have any experience. I ended up looking up classes I can take and how to become better at welding, I learned that you can get a welding certificate and this will allow me to make more money without doing too much work.

New Basics
I have a very good understanding of Spanish and I am able to make basic and advanced conversation with people who only speak Spanish. This is because when I went to Mexico to visit my family I was able to talk to them in a way I didn’t know I could talk to them. I did mix in some of my native languages, but I was able to talk to them about how I was and what I did and what I wanted to do in the future. As for English, I am able to hold on to a conversation for a while, but I do have a bit of a speech impediment where I end up saying a word a couple of times or can’t really say a word even if it’s simple. With this, I try to keep in good health by doing physical activities. The reason why would be, because I believe that keeping a sound body helps the mind. Football is the main way I try to get most of my exercise, but if that doesn’t do it I go to the gym and work out for an hour.

Thinking and reasoning skill.
I am a person who learns by real world/hands-on learning. I know hands-on learning this is the best way for me to learn, because whenever I tried to learn on paper and try to apply to something else I wouldn’t always understand unless I really like the subject. When I had my internship during the summer at PG&E I wasn’t able to learn how to read designs prints until we took a tour of one of the substations, and it instantly connected to me how they worked together. I was able to memorize what different parts went to what and how they interacted to get the power distributed to the population. I also use reasoning skill to put two things together. When I play games I try to find the easter eggs or secrets of a certain game I usually try to look for clues that the developers had left and try to follow them. I remember at one point in a game I had to backtrack all the way to the beginning because I found an item that looks similar to a hole I found. I would then try to backtrack until I find out what the item is used for and gain a new item that I hadn’t been able to use before.

Interpersonal and collaborative ability
As a senior varsity football player who has played for 3 years, I try to help the freshman or fewer experienced players. I did this during the summer when we use to practice together, by giving them pointers on how they should have their foot stance so it not too wide or skinny. The thing is that I try not being to mean about it either because I know that coming into a new sport with someone who is way bigger than you can be very intimidating. Ways  I counteract this is trying to funny or try to act confident around them in a joking manner so they know that I not a pushover, but you can mess around with me. When it comes to collaborating with school work though I try to be the person who takes control of how things are organized and try to schedule meet times. There was this one time where I had a group project due in 2 weeks and I wanted to get it done as fast as possible. This led me to make a meeting time at the library where we could focus and get it finished.  We had finished the project a week before it was done and we made correction when needed.

Technology
Ever since I was little I was always intrigued with how computers worked and I had always tried to tinker with basic electronics. This got to the point where I was able to diagnose my mother's computer when it had stopped working. The issue was that the power supply had been shorted when there was a power outage and I only needed to replace it. This had saved her a lot of money since she didn’t need to buy another computer. I don’t just know how to troubleshoot, I also know what kind of tech is best for different types of situations. First is that a Laptop is the best solution for a student, but I don’t need to be super expensive like a MacBook pro it could just be a dell, or that you could save a lot of money if want to build your own PC instead of buying a pre-built PC (ex. Best buy desktop). Then you could also have a computer that is good for rendering and editing film but isn’t that good for gaming. I can go way more in-depth with tech, but I couldn’t get in great detail without this taking up a lot of room.
