PG&E Internship
Closing Report
During this internship, I had to use a variety of skill that ranged from public speaking to team leading. The first skill I had to use was speaking formally during my interview for the internship. A skill like this is very important for the workspace because it is important to understand how and when to speak in a professional way. Next, I was using my listening skills to understand what was being taught to me during this internship since this was more like a class, rather than a shadowing internship. We came to work each day and had lectures about the company requirements to work at PG&E. Then, I had to use my skills for team working in order to finish the projects we were given as a group. I had to improve this skill and get over my shyness because I knew nobody in this internship. I was soon able to get over my shyness and we were able to divide the work up and finish the project on time and were even able to help correct each other's work. Finally, I was able to improve my conversational skill when I shadowed out PG&E guide. I was able to hold down a conversation that wasn’t random with the guide and ask a question about the company and pathways they have for employees.
What we had to do in our daily routine was fold blueprints, learn about safety in the workplace, learning workplace delicacy, and general learning. With general learning was about the company and how it is running, and red cross CPR training. With safety, I was actually able to get my OSHA 10 card for doing the training they provided. OSHA 10 is the USA safety regulations oh how a company has to be safe. We folded blueprints because this is the task we would have been given if we were a new employee or if you can’t do your regular job due to injury.
During my internship, there wasn’t really any obstacles, but there were inconveniences. One of these was trying to get to football practices on time when. My practices started at 3 and I got off work at 2:30, and it was at least a 20-minute drive from where the internship was without traffic.
When I first signed up for this internship I thought it was going to be more of a shadowing program where I was going to shadow an engineer around. I also thought I was going to be bossed around more because the only idea I had of an internship was from movies and from friends. Though I had these thoughts, it only surprised me when I learned that it was going to be like a class environment where we were going to take notes and listen to lectures. I feel like this is the way internships should be where you learn about the company first and then after learning about everything, you finally get to shadow someone who fits what you want to do in the future. I learned that I could go into one part of PG&E and eventually work for a different part of PG&E.
