Weekly Logs
Week 1
This internship is a little weird but looks like it will be fun. Instead of the common internship where you shadow a person, it’s more like a class you take at school. This first week we learned about safety in the workplace. We learned about OSHA and how they enforce these regulations and what happens if you do not follow them. You get fined for each day the problem isn’t resolved, and the amount the fine cost depends on the issue at hand. We also learn CPR and we all became CPR certified. Though these activities weren’t that fun to do, I ended up having fun doing it with the friends I made over the week. Even, though it was only the first week I knew that I am going to have fun with this internship program, because of them.
Week 2
This week was a little bit we started to get a little more serious and started to do things that were business related. We work on our resumes at the beginning of the week and then we got introduced to our projects we were not going to finish them this week but next week as well as present them. The projects are simple but require a bit of research and imagination to make them come out well. Since I had a little more experience with presentation I lead the how the slides should be formatted. It was kinda hard doing the presentations at first because we were provided with OUSD (oakland unified school district) laptops and the only way of getting in was having an email with the school district. The only solution I had was to bring in my own laptop for the time being. This weekend we are not aloud to talk to our teammate to complete the project.
Week 3
Week 3
This week we are continuing to working on presentations. The skills I took away from this is how to work with people you are unfamiliar with. We had three presentations to complete this week one was to create an idea to get a grant from PG&E, present a program that PG&E provides, and lastly was how can a household save on their energy bill. At first it was pretty difficult, because we were able to talk during the weekend and we still had a bit of work to do. Although on a time constraint we were able to finish it and have time to practice. Towards the end of the week we had a mock interview and this would have been for an actual position for PG&E. I’m not too sure about how I did on this, but most people didn’t pass the internship.
Week 4
This week we get to shadow a portion of PG&E depending on what you wanted to do. Since I was interested in electrical engineering, so some other coworkers and I got to shadow the person who overlooks most of the bay area. His name was Alvin. The first day we got to experience what a new work would go through, we started folding and learning to read electrical blueprints of substations. This was extremely boring folding papers for 4 hours. Next, day we took a tour of one of the sub stations in oakland, they were working on installing a new transformer. Finally, on our the last day with we were taken to a facility where they control the load of power in different areas. We actually got to meet someone new who always talks to Alvin but they never met face to face. On my last day I was given the chance to talk about the program to the parents and what we had learned during it. I took this opportunity.
